WHERE STORIES MATTER

A reminder of what’s really holding the universe together.

What's Really Holding the Universe Together. | meredithbernard.com | #Woman2Woman Linkup

She looked at me with those steel blue saucers and said she wasn’t going to be scared to go in the snow this year, because she knew the ground was really down there and she was four now. When she was three she was scared to go out because her little legs would take a few steps on the deep ice encrusted powder and then it would give way and swallow her all the way to waist.

But today she is old enough…wise enough…to know the ground is really there under the snow, even if she can’t see it.

She knows she will be held, even if it feels like she’s falling.

In the past six years my children have taught me truths I’ve yet to master in my thirty-six years. And isn’t it a beautiful mystery how God does that?

This morning in the early light of day, before the house and rest of the farm woke up, I read about the God-man that upholds the entire universe…by the WORD of His POWER.

He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. -Hebrews 1:3a

Even when it feels like the whole world is going to hell and the ground beneath us is surely going to give way any moment to those who would rather see us dead than alive because we are “people of the cross“…the power of His word still stands and still holds as true as the first time it was spoken.

Even when marriages are on the brink of falling apart or have already succumb and it wasn’t your choice or maybe it was…even then His word still stands and still holds you and this world together.

Even when the doctor gives the diagnosis that you are sure is going to unravel any bit of sanity and strength you have left to give, and it feels like your world is hanging by a thread at the threat of leaving your whole world behind in the form of tiny humans you birthed and burped and would bleed and die for, and yet you may not get the chance to die for them, but certainly before them…even then, He is holding the universe and your seemingly small and insignificant life together.

Even when you are living life alone and would give anything in the world just to have someone to share your world with…even then, He holds you and your dreams in the palm of His mighty hand through the Word of His Power.

Even when you trudge day in and day out to the job you hate, but it pays the bills and if you didn’t go, then your world would certainly fall apart…as much as you can see, anyway…even then, He is holding all around you together.

Even when we can’t see the ground for the snow and bills and bloodshed and shattered dreams piled high, the ground is still there and we are still grounded IN HIM through the WORD of HIS POWER.

This world…your world, my world…OUR WORLD…is not in OUR hands. It’s in HIS. And IT IS BEING HELD TOGETHER by the hands that formed it and that formed you and I and that made a way for us to leave here to go where He is.

That is where Hope lies friends. Through the Word of His Power we have hope and in that HOPE, we are held and held together.

The word of His power is what’s holding the universe together and there is so much hope in that reminder for us all.

Meredith, this is beautiful! And it’s so amazing what we learn from the little ones, no? Your post reminds me of the old hymn: On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand (or snow…)ReplyCancel

Grounded in Him, He does not let our foot slip when on such a sure foundation… you have such a beautiful blog, and more importantly, such a graceful, hearty way of sharing truths that encourage and lift up.
Thankful for your words today, Meredith.ReplyCancel

  • This one is so true, Meredith. Powerful. Sometimes the ground we are standing on feels so shaking or its plainly pulled out from under us. Life’s been a little like that lately for me. The truth of God’s word and His faithfulness over time, time and time again, is the only thing that sustains. Because all other hope is just wishful, right? Hope in God is the only stability. Thankful for your words today and the reminder that it is He who holds us, holds it all, all together.
    Thank you, friend.

If I got in the car right now, I could hug you in the next 48 hours or so. 😉 Your heart … gosh it blesses me so much. You gave us a overflowing cup full of hope this morning. Our God is amazing – He holds so much together and somewhere in the mess and mire we sit, watched over mindfully by Him – so incredible. Thanks for making me stop and stand in awe. Hugs, friend!ReplyCancel

This is what I needed to hear today. That no matter where I am, God has me and my mess in His hands. Your post reminded me of Psalm 139 when it says, “Even there, your hand will guide me.” No matter where I am or where I go, God’s hand is with me, guiding me. (It’s been a tough week with jobs and health.) Thank you! -DanaReplyCancel

Oh Meredith, this may be your best post ever! Or maybe just that it’s speaking to my heart this morning. He holds the world (and me) together. New reports of such barbarity have been getting to me, weighing me down in the back of my mind, but your words reassure me this morning that God is still the solid ground beneath my feet. The ground on which I stand. Thank you.ReplyCancel
